This book was definitely a difficult read to complete. I think it is the most "foreign" feeling book I've ever read.

Let me explain what I mean by "foreign feeling". I've enjoyed fiction from South Africa, Europe, South America, North America and books written in the distant past. I'm a foreigner living in a foreign country and I've lived in Africa and North and Central America. So, what's my point? My point is that I've been exposed to a perspective or two. But I have not encountered writing that depicts a social structure as strange as this book presents.

The book is set in 1960 and follows the death of several people on a remote island called Flatey (a real place). Each chapter ends with a separate running dialogue that deals with the text of an ancient Icelandic epic. The chapters are very short, some no more than 2 sides of a page. The vignettes in the epic portions are bizarre, violent, & crude-- just what you'd expect from an ancient epic of a warlike people (not so different from the better-known Norse tales, Greek epics, and Beowulf).

There doesn't seem to be any single main character, only a couple who get more exposure than the others. And we're talking some very weird characters, behaving in simple ways but motivated by bizarre impulses. Aaargg!! I'd like to say more about a couple characters, but I can't without ruining the story.

The dialogue veers between stilted and extremely simple to hip and pretty funny at times. The first third of the book seemed to really dwell on food. And talk about some interesting food. I grew up on a fishery and thought we ate some pretty disgusting stuff. The stuff in this book goes to a new level-- fermented ray, fermented shark, puffin breast, baby seal fat, and on and on.

So, anyhow, if you like murder mysteries I'd say check it out, just keep a really open mind. You won't have read many books with investigators like this one. If you think you are going to get the type of Scandinavian murder mystery book that is so popular right now you'd better think again.

If you read books to escape this probably isn't it. If you read books that make you think "what the h#!1 is going on here?!" then you might like this. You certainly won't forget it in a hurry.

No Strings Attached Book Review

I have read and enjoyed many books by Harper, I couldn’t tell you my favorite, until now. No Strings Attached jumped to the top of the list. The story is told in third person, past tense and from Micky’s point-of-view. Which allowed me to become closely acquainted with her.

The story telling is so vivid, so realistic, I’m sure many, many readers will find themselves able to relate to the struggles, Micky, a woman in her forties, has to deal with coming out later in life. Not only to her two teenage children, but to her ex who she’s still on friendly terms with, her mother, and everyone else who is important to her.

The teenagers added a layer of depth to the story but by no means overwhelmed it. The coffee shop setting and cast of characters were wonderful. Amber is the type of best friend everyone needs. I adored her.

Micky’s first lesbian encounter, with a woman who insisted on a ‘no strings attached’ hook-up, had my inner lesbian purring in erotic bliss. For most of the story I didn’t know if these two would get past their individual hang-ups so to speak. My one quibble would be that I never really got to know Robin, yet at the same time, I realize it wasn’t her story. I did like how the story showed no matter how set in their ways a person might be, love can win out.

The ending left me satisfied and wanting more at the same time. I can’t wait to see who features in book two. I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a well penned, emotional, heart-warming story

Dear Me Book Review

Alexis Holt unknowingly meets the woman of her dreams at a party. Unfortunately, Alexis was at the wrong place at the wrong time and walked away from the encounter thinking Stacy Kirkland was an arrogant snob. Alexis knew it wouldn’t be the last time she saw Stacy, and she wasn’t looking forward to their next meeting.

Thanks to the Internet, Stacy Kirkland already knows who Alexis is before they meet face to face. She’s one step ahead of Alexis because Stacy already has a crush on her. There are a couple of problems, though—Stacy’s in a relationship that’s in the last stages of its demise, and after meeting Alexis, she’s pretty certain that Alexis despises her.

Grab something cool to drink, find a comfortable place, and let Robin Alexander take you on a hilarious journey to happily ever after.

This book had so many funny moments and it was sweet all at the same time. I could not stop laughing and shaking my head. Never form your opinion based on a first impression because you can lose a lot because of this. Neither one expected to like the other, let alone be so attracted. A fantasy turns to reality. The writing style is quick, solid and perfectly paced. A well developed story. The main characters are well drawn, energetic and very likeable. The bunch of other quirky characters are perfect in their own way and with a great sense of humor. They are all so good together. I was truly intrigued by them. The flow of the book was easy and hard to put down. I loved the whole shebang. This is definitely going to the top of my list. A page turner and definitely a keeper. I strongly recommend this book. You can't survive love without laughing. Enjoy!

Description of Siteless: 1001 Building Forms

Some may call it the first manifesto of the twenty-first century, for it lays down a new way to think about architecture. Others may think of it as the last architectural treatise, for it provides a discursive container for ideas that would otherwise be lost. Whatever genre it belongs to, SITELESS is a new kind of architecture book that seems to have come out of nowhere. Its author, a young French architect practicing in Tokyo, admits he "didn't do this out of reverence toward architecture, but

Description of Frank Lloyd Wright

Wright on: The star pieces of Americas greatest architect   A building by Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is at once unmistakably individual, and evocative of an entire era. Notable for their exceptional understanding of an organic environment, as well as for their use of steel and glass to revolutionize the interface of indoor and outdoor, Wright’s designs helped announce the age of modernity, as much as they secured his own name in the annals of architectural genius.

The Upcycle is the eagerly awaited follow-up to Cradle to Cradle, the most consequential ecological manifesto of our time. Now, drawing on the lessons gained from 10 years of putting the cradle-to-cradle concept into practice with businesses, governments, and ordinary people, William McDonough and Michael Braungart envision the next step in the solution to our ecological crisis: We don't just reuse resources with greater effectiveness, we actually improve them as we use them. For McDonough and B
